---------------------------------------------------------- H I R T I N N E N B R I E F 2004/06 vom 1. Ermöglichen wir anderen das Menschsein Wir wünschen Ihnen ein besinnliches Allerheiligenfest im Kreis ihrer Familien und Freunde Christine Mayr-Lumetzberger, Sprecherin für Österreich Dr. Gisela Forster, Sprecherin für Deutschland Dr. Patricia Fresen, Leiterin des Ausbildungsprogramms ------------------------------------------------------ PASTORAL LETTER ON THE FEASTS OF ALL SAINTS AND ALL SOULS On the feasts of All Saints and All Souls, 1 and 2 November, many people remember their dead relatives and friends and in Europe most people visit family graves. During these days, we become newly aware of the transitoriness of life: leaving this world, and being born, are the two great life-events which bring the greatest changes. We need to cope with the change from one world, one state of being, to another. GREAT DEMANDS MADE ON US We know that these profound changes are not easy, neither birth nor death: coming onto the earth, leaving it, receiving a body, letting go of one's body, bringing a spirit open to development and giving up that spirit or moving into a new state of being ... these are all processes which are part of the greatest challenges that all human beings must go through. For the birth process we have midwives, who help us as we first open our eyes on this world. But who helps us as we come to the end of life? Do we in fact need help during the process of dying? HELP WHILE WE ARE DYING - HELPING PEOPLE TO DIE? In the process of dying we can generally distinguish various phases. Sometimes slowly, sometimes fast, the organs begin to slow down; movement, activity and busy-ness come to an end; instead of actively planning for the future and looking ahead, we begin to look back on our lives and to ask ourselves: What was my life, what have I done, what have I achieved, what moved me and what did I move? All this is recorded and sorted within. PEOPLE NEED HELP In the next few phases, people do need help. The doctor comes more often, there are more frequent visits to hospitals, various forms of assistance are required and there comes the day when one's family says clearly: You need help. REACTIONS The time is approaching when one must say goodbye. People know this within themselves. They gradually no longer want to eat or drink, they close their eyes often and respond only minimally to questions or greetings. DOES ONE NEED HELP AT THIS STAGE? WHAT ABOUT EUTHANASIA? The world is divided on this issue. At one extreme, "in Belgium and Holland the number of assisted deaths is increasing", says the Süddeutsche Zeitung of 19 September 2004 and continues: "The law is often confusing." In Holland, since active euthanasia (i.e. by medical means, an injection for instance, a person is "freed" from life or from suffering) has been legalized, 1815 people have been killed by active euthanasia. At the other extreme, in other countries precisely the opposite is often the case. People who are extremely confused, very ill and are in the process of taking leave of this world, are tied to the bed so that they do not fall, they are artificially fed, and they are harried and fussed-over, even when their spirit has already departed. People who can no longer think or decide, can no longer reflect or take any action, are kept technically alive with various kinds of apparatus, medication and astronaut-feeding. People are often torn between these two extremes. On the one hand, people are killed because the law allows it. On the other, people who are ready to go are forcibly kept alive, because of the way the law is interpreted. So in various countries and under various types of law, dying may be rushed into or prevented for as long as possible. The decision needs to be made by a third party, even when instructions are available and a clear expression of the person's wishes has been made. WHERE IS THE PERSON? Most people want to decide for themselves when they are ready to meet death. They know that the end of their time in this world is approaching and they express what they want. They must only be heard. CHOOSING FOR ONESELF Recently we received a letter from a woman whose aunt decided that she no longer wanted to be kept alive by medication or even by nourishment. She had suffered for many years from a serious illness and knew that she was terminally ill. She knew that she was dying and she was ready to meet death. When the parish priest visited her, he upbraided her for wanting to commit "suicide": he could simply not understand that she was brave enough to decide that she was ready to let go and to die naturally. Only with the help of family and friends who understood, could this woman keep the aggression of some doctors and the parish priest at bay. She could than lie in bed and let go of everything. After a few days, she died peacefully and naturally. This and the many other experiences we women priests have with the dying, gives us the assurance that a natural, non-violent death is not terrible or cruel. Nature is not brutal. When people facing death, like the woman in the paragraph above, are mature enough to move consciously and responsibly into their own death, the helpers should not interfere, but rather hear what it is the person wants and then, if the need arises, protect the dying person from those who do not understand and who want to interfere with nature. HEARING AND PROTECTING - HEARING what the dying person wants, listening attentively to their wishes, even when not expressed in words, not contradicting, not trying to persuade, not deceiving the person ... - PROTECTING the dying person from aggressive medical intervention and from those who want to force their own ideas or wishes about death onto the person who is actually facing death. REJOICING OVER HEAVEN Again and again, we experience a natural death as peaceful and beautiful. Those of us who minister in Hospice or who accompany the dying, trying to hear and protect them, experience over and over the gentle, soothing phases of natural death: - first comes the decision, the awareness: I am going, I am leaving this world. - secondly there is the joy, the rejoicing over heaven, over those who are there already and await us. There is a longing for the next world. - thirdly there comes the certainty: I am in good hands, both here in this this world and in that other, to which I am going, whatever people may call it. - fourthly comes the trust in those who are protecting me. - fifthly, there is the letting-go of everything that binds us to life: nourishment, stimulating or preventative medicines, conflicts, struggles with people and with authority. Leaving everything, letting-go. - sixthly, peace comes. All activities can be left aside peacefully, Letting-go, letting-be in peace. - seventh, there is the surrender to nature: the physical organs slow down until they no longer function, breathing is slower and more peaceful. Nature carries the dying person gently, pours out hormones that fill the person with peace and happiness and gives the person the ability to let go gently and freely. DOES A DYING PERSON, THEN, NEED HELP? After the above reflections, we can say that a dying person does indeed need help, not in the form of violent intervention from outside, neither physical nor social nor spiritual intervention. HELP BY PROTECTING The dying person needs to be protected, so that he or she can be most fully a person, their own person, both in living and in dying. --- We wish you all the blessings of All Saints and All Souls Feasts, of Halloween, as you celebrate with family and friends.
