Zu Beginn des Jahren 2004 überraschte uns die Solidaritätserklärung der

NATIONAL COALITION OF AMERICAN NUNS (VEREINIGUNG DER AMERIKANISCHEN NONNEN),
die ihre Solidarität mit Frau Dr. Patricia Fresen ausdrückte.

Dear Trish,

On behalf of the Board of the National Coalition of American Nuns, I
commend you for choosing ordination within the Roman Catholic Church, even
though it is contrary to canon law.

You remind us of Rosa Parks, a black woman in the U.S., who could not
abide by a law that forced black people to sit in the back of the bus. If
she complied with the law, she would proclaim her second-class status and
lose her self-respect. If she sat where she believed she belonged, she
would incur the punishment to those who broke the law; namely,
imprisonment. Either way, suffering was to be her lot. Rosa chose to be
true to herself and to break the law. She became a gift not only for black
people in the U.S. but also for others, both black and non-black,
throughout the world.

You could have chosen to remain in your prestigious and acceptable
teaching position within the Church in South Africa; yet you chose to be
ordained with the other women in Europe. You chose to accept the principle
of gender equality you were teaching your students and not hold back on
the basis of your womanhood, risking excommunication from the Church and
expulsion from your religious Congregation. As painful as these actions
might be, you resolved to follow God's call to you. It is this strength
that evokes our admiration.

Like Rosa Parks, your action speaks loudly to our Church and the world.
Like Rosa Parks, you will nudge our Church in changing an unjust law that
restrains women and ignores their full personhood. With ordination, we as
women can claim the same position as men in the Church's social structure
much like Rosa Parks did in the civil society in the United States.

Attached is a letter that the NCAN board has sent to the leadership of
your community. Our prayers and best wishes are with you and the other
women with whom you were ordained in Europe. May God continue to lead all
of you with gentleness and strength.

Dear Sisters,

     On the occasion of the ordination of Sister Patricia Fresen, the
board of the National Coalition of American Nuns (NCAN), commends you for
stating publicly that the "research and discussion about the role of women
in the church, ordained priesthood as a specific ministry and ordination
of women must continue." We also applaud your support for dialogue and
actions in this regard.

     NCAN is an organization founded in the United States in 1969 by women
religious for the purpose of working, studying and speaking out on human
rights and justice issues in the church and society,

     In the United States, women religious who have made similar remarks
have lost their teaching positions, even tenured ones, in Catholic
institutions. Therefore, for you, as people in the leadership position of
your congregation, to make this statement publicly is a courageous step in
addressing a persistent issue in our church.

     It is unfortunate, however, that you felt the need to distance
yourself from Patricia Fresen when she wanted to fulfill her call to the
priesthood. You believed the men in the Vatican would excommunicate her if
she chose to be ordained. Does not excommunication require our
participation? No authority figure can pronounce a sentence of
excommunication upon a person if the community of faith continues to
embrace and include the person within the community. Such an act would be
meaningless because excommunication requires the cooperation of the whole
community.

     We wish you could have stood with Sister Patricia rather than asking
her to withdraw from your congregation. However, we do recognize your
anguish and desire for sisterhood because you state, "We respect Trish's
personal decision, and even if she is no longer a member of our
Congregation, we hope to continue relating with Trish with sisterliness
and acceptance of her as a person."
     It seems this time could have been a tremendous opportunity for you
as a congregation to counteract patriarchy. Was this not the factor that
was impinging upon you as a congregation when one of your own Sisters
sought ordination? Was it not patriarchy, rather than Trish's seeking
ordination, that placed you in your present dilemma?

     The National Coalition of American Nuns believes that we, as Sisters
in community, need to stand together rather than succumb to the pressures
we experience from those outside our congregations, even if this pressure
comes from a patriarchy in official leadership positions in our Church. In
this way, we can exercise once more the prophetic role for which our very
congregations were founded.

     Again, we thank you for your boldness in stating publicly that the
ordination of women needs to be discussed, even though the male leaders of
our church have declared it is a closed matter.

will preach in St Luke's Church in Munich (near the German Museum) on the
following theme:

DEATH AND ETERNITY

The homily will take place within a 'Thomas Mass', i.e. a Mass for
'doubters and other good Christians'.

After the homily, people can come for a blessing or they can participate
in the post-homily discussion.

We would be happy to welcome many of you to this Eucharist and personally

Vous nous rappelez Rosa Park,une Noire des U.S.A.qui ne pouvait pas se soumettre à une loi qui obligeait les Noirs à s\x{2019}asseoir à l\x{2019}arrière des bus. En se soumettant à la loi ,elle aurait reconnu son statut de seconde catégorie et perdu sa propre estime . En s\x{2019}asseyant à ce qu\x{2019}elle estimait être sa place,elle encourrait la sanction des contrevenants à la loi,à savoir la prison. De toute façon,elle souffrirait.Rosa choisi la fidélité à elle \x{2013}même et l\x{2019}infraction à la loi . Elle devint un exemple non seulement pour les Noirs des U.S.A mais aussi pour les autres ,Noirs ou pas ,dans le monde entier.
Vous auriez pu choisir de rester à votre poste d\x{2019}enseignement prestigieux et agréable dans l\x{2019}église d\x{2019}Afrique du Sud, cependant vous avez choisi d\x{2019}être ordonnée avec les autres femmes en Europe .
Vous avez choisi d\x{2019}accepter le principe d\x{2019}égalité des genres enseigné par vous-même à vos étudiants et de ne pas faire l\x{2019}impasse sur votre féminité,risquant l\x{2019}excommunication de l\x{2019}église et l\x{2019}expulsion de votre congrégation religieuse.
Quoi que ces actions vous coûtent,vous  avez adopté la résolution de suivre l\x{2019}appel de Dieu.
C\x{2019}est cette force qui provoque notre admiration.
Comme Rosa Parks,votre action interpelle notre Eglise et le monde

Le conseil d\x{2019}administration de la Fédér ation  Nationale des religieuses américaines (NCAN) vous félicite d\x{2019}avoir affirmé publiquement , lors de l\x{2019}ordination de S\x{0153}ur Patricia Fresen , que « recherche et débat sur le rôle des femmes dans l\x{2019}église , la prêtrise  comme ministère spécifique et l\x{2019}ordination des femmes  doivent continuer ». Nous applaudissons également à votre soutien au dialogue et actions en ce sens.

NCAN est une organisation fondée aux U.S.A.en 1969 par des religieuses pour l\x{2019}étude et prise de positions sur la justiceet les droits de l\x{2019}Homme dans l\x{2019}église et la société.

Il est regrettable, cependant , que vous ayiez éprouvé le besoin de prendre vos distances vis à vis de Patricia Fresen quand elle a souhaité répondre à l\x{2019}appel à la prêtrise. Vous pensiez que les hommes du Vatican allaient l\x{2019} excommunier si elle choisissait d\x{2019}être ordonnée . L\x{2019} excommunication  ne demande-t-elle  pas notre parrticipation ? Aucune autorité ne peut prononcer  un jugement d\x{2019}excommunication sur quelqu\x{2019}un si la communauté de foi continue à inclure affectueusement la personne dans la communauté .
Un tel acte n\x{2019}aurait pas de sens  parce que l \x{2018}excommunication demande la participation de la communauté toute entière.
Nous aurions souhaité que vous ayez soutenu S\x{0153}ur Patricia plutôt que de lui demander de se retirer de votre congrégation. Cependant nous comprenons votre angoisse et votre désir de fraternité car vous déclarez : «  Nous respectons la décision personnelle de Trish,et même si elle ne fait plus partie de notre Congrégation , nous espérons continuer à avoir des sentiments fraternels envers Trish et à la respecter comme personne. »
Il semble que cet épisode aurait pu être une occasion remarquable pour votre congrégation de s\x{2019}opposer au patriarcat . N\x{2019}est-ce pas ce facteur qui vous a touché lorsqu\x{2019}une de vos propres s\x{0153}urs  a recherché à être ordonnée ? la Fédér ation  Nationale des religieuses américaines pense que  en tant que S\x{0153}urs vivant en
communauté , nous devons nous soutenir mutuellement plutôt que céder aux pressions qui nous viennent de l\x{2019}extérieur , même si ces pressions viennent du patriarcat  tenant la position officielle de commandement dans notre église. C\x{2019}est ainsi que nous pouvons jouer une fois de plus  le rôle prophétique pour lequel précisément nos congrégations ont été fondées.
