You have my complete support and I just wrote a letter of support to the action group so as to stand with you in solidarity. Personally, I cannot express the degree and depth of grace that came to me the day of your ordination and for days following. Had you been where I live, In Parksville, BC Canada I would have asked to be among your number even though I need more specific theological and pastoral education. I am now searching for that through WOC and the newly forming Mary Magadalen Apostle Seminary. These bold moves are startling and shattering psychically for everyone in the church, and no matter what position different people take, they cannot remain unaffected. Many more persons will find the courage to act more boldly than they have in the past so I don't think you will be "hung out to dry" as we say in Canada. If you are you will not be alone. I believe your actions are informed by tremendous grace and that this is the Spirit's will. It will all unfold in time. I loved the timing of the ordination on June 29 as it coincided so effectively with the sexual abuse scandalsmade public in the US. All of that will not go away nor will the immense purification needed in this male-dominated church and amongst the rest of us insofar as we have been complicit and compliant for so many years. Therefore, it is an atrocity that the Roman Catholic Church fails to recognize that people, both men and women, are called to the priesthood and that failure to act upon this is a sin against the Holy Spirit. I encourage you to recommend that the women and bishop who are under monitum are released from same. Furthermore, I ask that the church reconsider its fossilized position on women's ordination. In my view, this was a brave and courageous act drawn out of these women by the Holy Spirit. How else couuld one express such boldness at this time in a church that represses women who have grown far beyond the Vatican hierarchy's notion of who they should continue to be. For some time I've realized that a women could have 10 PH.D's in all relevant subjects required by the church for valid ordination and still not be accepted as qualified for anything other than the church's definition of who she should be. Yes, this continued rejection is a grave sin against women who are claiming rights that have been denied them for centuries by the church and other institutions. No human has the right, divine or otherwise, to define the nature of another person let alone all persons of a particular gender. To continue to assume this right, given the knnowledge we have today, is irresponsible and foolish. Although there are many who support the Vatican position, over time, it will become increasingly incredible as the progress of women and men in knowledge about themselves alters consicousness about who they can be or even must be. If their transformation happens faster than the Vatican's( and it is) then the gap between women and men, the majority of the church faithful and the magesterium will only grow wider. It is not the ordination of the 7 women, or the WOC, or the conception of Mary Magdalen Apostle seminary that is creating a schism. The schism already exists and these movements illuminate how critical it has become. Prayers and support to our German, Austrian and US women and women and men internationally who are working for the ordination of women. Dr. M. First of all, I want to express my deep respect, congratulations and solidarity to both of you and the other five women who were ordained as priests last 29 June. For years, ever since I became aware of the level of discrimination against women in the Catholic Church, I have time and again written -as a columnist in several newspapers in Guatemala- about these injustices. And the recent scandals in the church concerning sexual abuse by clergy in so many countries has done nothing but strengthen my resolution not to be a Catholic, but to support any action with the potential of deconstructing the patriarchy within the church. It is because of all this that I also wish to manifest my deepest admiration for your courage. I can only begin to imagine the guts it took for you to decide to become priests and thus face the wrath of the church's hierarchy. Response from Sr. Bridget Mary Meehan SFCC, President of the Federation of Christian Ministries, USA It is ironic that the Vatican is threatening to excommunicate the seven Roman Catholic women who were ordained to the priesthood in June near Passau, Germany on July 22nd, the feast day of St. Mary of Magdala, the "apostle to the apostles". Like Mary of Magdala, the newly ordained women are special messengers of good news that women and men are called by Christ to be disciples and equals in all church ministries. All four gospels confirm that Mary of Magdala was the first witness of the resurrection. She was chosen by Christ to proclaim the central mystery of Christianity to the male apostles. The Vatican's threatened excommunication of the seven ordained women reflects the curia's desperate fear of women as images of God, fully capable of representing Christ at the altar. This hierarchial, misogynist church seems willing to stop at nothing to keep women out of the priesthood including denying its own authentic church teaching reflected in Genesis 1:27 that women are created in the image and likeness of God and Galations 3:27-28 that says: "All baptized in Christ, you have all clothed yourselves in Christ, and there are no more distinctions between Jew and Greek, slave and free, male and female, but all of you are one in Christ." If Cardinal Ratzinger wants to aim the "big guns" of excommunication at anyone today, he should begin by excommunicating the bishops who covered-up priest sex abuse of children, women, and nuns around the world. The Vatican has not fired any of the bishops who kept sex -abuser priests working in parish ministry in the United States. This scandal has devastated the lives of thousands of innocent parishoners and destroyed the moral credibilty of the church. The newly ordained women priests are signs of hope for a renewed priestly ministry in the church. The Vatican is living a gospel of shame in our time. Cardinal Ratzinger threatenes to punish courageous, prophetic women priests who have responded to Christ's call to serve the church at a time of a worldwide shortage of priests. In solidarity with the seven women let us express our outrage and condemn the Vatican's most recent act of oppression toward women. Let our motto be: Yes to women priests, No to pedophile priests.! Now is the moment for Catholics to stand up to the Vatican and call all Catholics to participate in an international boycott of money to the Vatican and to local dioceses until the people are treated as equals and partners in all ministries of the church.
